According to a report from ECO/Capital Verde, there was a 165% increase in demand for trips in the Portuguese capital through Uber's Individual and Paid Passenger Transport in Uncharacterized Vehicles (TVDE) services, when compared to the summer of the previous year. Thus, Lisbon remained in third position, behind London and Paris, and ahead of Amsterdam and Dubai, respectively, in terms of the number of trips made.
This Portuguese city is not the only one to appear in the ranking of countries where requests for travel by foreigners through Uber are more pronounced. The Algarve and Porto also recorded increases, 104% and 158%, respectively, compared to 2021. The Algarve region rose two positions compared to 2021, now occupying 8th place, and Porto went from 18th on the list to 12th place compared to the same period.
At the same time, Uber identified other Portuguese cities — Viana do Castelo (+345%), Viseu (+295%) and Santarém (+199%) — which showed a considerable increase in the number of trips made by tourists in the summer of this year.
“Uber's data points to an increase in tourists looking for various types of destinations. It is with great satisfaction that we see several Portuguese cities at the top of the preferences of foreign users of Uber”, said Francisco Vilaça, general director of Uber in Portugal.
The increase in demand for Uber's services in the summer is in line with the growth seen in the tourism sector. The latest data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) revealed that the month of July 2022 had more tourists and overnight stays than in the same month of 2019, translating into an increase of 6.3% and 4.8%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2019.
In total, Portugal received Uber trips from tourists from 86 countries.
